Stop Blasting the Same CV: An 8-Step Job Search System You Can Run With Claude
6 min readPublished By Ofer Regev
Here's how most job searches run. One CV, sent everywhere. Company research as a scramble the night before the interview. Interview prep rebuilt from scratch every round. Applications tracked in your head, or nowhere.
None of that is a talent problem. It's a system problem. And it's the kind of problem Claude skills are good at, because a skill is a reusable playbook you set up once and never re-explain.
What changes with a system
Without a system
With a system
Same CV, low response rate
Every application tailored in minutes
Research is a scramble
Company insight ready before you apply
Prep rebuilt every round
Prep reused and sharpened each round
Applications live in your head
One tracker shows where you stand
No coding and no prompt engineering. Each step is a helper you just ask for, in plain language. You stay in control: you review and edit everything before it goes anywhere.
The foundation: steps 1-4
1. Set up your tracker. Say "Set up my job tracker." It creates three trackers (Applications, Targets and Networking) in Notion or as local files, your choice. It's a one-time setup, and every other step reads from it and writes to it, so Claude already knows where you stand.
2. Build your target list. Say "Find me 20 target companies" and give it your level, location, industry and stage. It researches and ranks companies against your criteria and drops them into your Targets tracker. Refresh it as your criteria change.
3. Research before you apply. Say "Research [Company] for a PM role." You get funding, leadership, culture and employee sentiment, plus what's worth referencing in your application. Save the report: you'll reuse it for your CV, your letter and your interviews.
4. Know your fit, honestly. Paste your CV and the job description and ask "Am I a good fit for this job?" The verdict is strong, stretch or long shot, with real gaps called out instead of a green checklist. Then you decide: apply, tailor harder, or skip. Skipping is a perfectly good outcome, and it saves you a week.
The application: steps 5-8
5. Tailor your CV. No CV yet? A conversational interview builds an ATS-friendly one from scratch. Already have one? The tailoring step reorders and reframes it for one specific role, surfacing the job description's keywords without inventing anything. That last part matters. It rewrites what you did; it doesn't make up what you didn't.
6. Write a cover letter that lands. Three short paragraphs, not a template, anchored on one real hook. It works best after steps 3 and 4, because it uses your company research and your fit analysis as input. Edit the hook, keep the structure.
7. Prep for every interview stage. An HR screen, a professional interview and a home assignment test different things. Tell Claude which stage you're at and with whom, and it builds a prep doc for what that stage actually tests. You walk in with talking points, not generic advice.
8. Do it all in one shot. Paste your CV and the job description once, say "Build my full application package," and the whole chain runs in one guided conversation: research, fit, tailored CV, cover letter and stage prep.
Why it works
Two things. First, one-time setup: Claude knows the plan going forward, so you stop re-explaining your CV and your goals. Second, consistency: the tenth application gets the same quality as the first, instead of the rushed one at 11 p.m.
It also changes how the search feels. "Help me find a job" is a cloud. "Run step 3 on this company" is a task you can finish before lunch.
One honest caveat
The AI drafts; you decide. Read every output. Check every claim against your real experience. A tailored CV with an invented achievement is worse than a plain one, and a recruiter can tell.
Try it this week
Set up the tracker (step 1) and add five companies you'd actually want to work at.
Pick one open role. Run steps 3 and 4 on it.
Only if the fit verdict says "apply" or "stretch," run step 8.
The skills used here are the job-hunter set: tracker setup, target-company finder, company researcher, fit analyzer, CV builder and tailor, cover-letter writer, interview prep, and a full application packager.
